Tanzania: Power Firm Plans Fresh Power Tariffs

Dodoma — TANZANIA Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) plans to announce new energy tariffs soon should the industry regulator, Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (Ewura), endorse the proposal.

Head of Strategic Plans of Tanesco, Mr Patrick Sankara, said here TANESCO would also introduce new plan on time use of the service, saying the company will reduce costs to customers who will agree with the new plan.

"The energy use goes up at around 6pm to 10pm, thus forcing the company to use its alternative source of energy in order to cope with the use," said Mr Sankara during a meeting with its stakeholders.

The meeting was convened to get views from stakeholders on how best to carry out the new plan as well as understanding challenges likely to happen while implementing the plan.

Presenting a topic on levels of time use of the service, Mr Sankara said since there was huge use of energy from 6pm to 10pm, the company was being forced to incur huge costs of operation to meet the demand.

"We plan to introduce the new plan to our mega customers to shift time use of the energy service from evening to morning and afternoon," he said.

In her remarks, Dodoma Regional Commissioner (RC), Ms Chiku Galawa, advised Tanesco to devise a plan which would help to curb complaints from its customers in order to improve relations with them.

Acting Tanesco Central Zone Manager, Mr Joel Kuandika, told the meeting that they have received proposals from the customers.
