Wind power plant in Meru, Kenya set to generate 400MW of power

Posted on : Tuesday , 7th July 2015

Kenyan electricity producing company, KenGen is set to develop a 400MW wind power farm in Meru County putting an addition to the growing portfolio of renewable energy sources.

The first phase of the project which is stipulated to be complete by December, 2017 will generate 100MW of electricity.

KenGen’s Managing Director, Albert Mugo confirmed the information and said that the project might be financed by French Development Agency (AfD) and German Development Bank (KfW) as they are currently conducting due diligence on the project before committing themselves.

“The lenders are on site this week to conduct due diligence on the project. The first phase of the project for a 50MW-100MW project will be financed through concessional funding,” said Albert Mugo.

In Kenya, wind-generated power currently constitutes only one per cent of the total generation being fed into the national grid, a share which is set to increase given the several projects coming up across the country like the 100MW wind farm by General Electric in Kajiado, a 60MW one by Aeolus Kenya, 25MW wind farm in Ngong’ and a 90MW project by Electrawinds in Lamu.

As part of the Governments vision to generate 5,000MW of power by 2018, KenGen which is the largest power producing company in Kenya intends to use up to US$ 1.3bn mainly in concessional funding over the next two to four years on renewable energy projects.
