Hydroelectric Dams in Ethiopia at Full Capacity Following Rainy Season, EEP

Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) declared that following the previous rainy season, its dams were completely refilled, guaranteeing enough water for power generation to meet this year's ambitious goals.

 

The dams have accumulated enough water to enable full-capacity energy generation, according to Tiruwork Shiferaw, Planning Bureau and Power Plant Operation Sector Manager for EEP. In order to maximize productivity and guarantee sustainability, the organization is actively controlling water levels.

 

While Gilgel Gibe III and Amerti Neshie have sufficient reserves, eight dams including Gilgel Gibe I, Finca’a, Melka Wakena, Tana Beles, Tekeze, Genale Dawa, Koka, and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam are said to be full. EEP is renovating to improve water use efficiency and plans to produce more than 25,000 gigawatts (GW) of electricity per hour during the current fiscal year.

 

At the same time, Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) announced that its number of clients had increased to 4.9 million. With 167,952 new connections made since July 2024, the corporation intends to add 600,000 additional clients during the current year.

 

Electricity is now available in 8,245 rural villages, up from 667 twenty years ago. More than 74,000 individuals will benefit from the 25 mini-grid projects that are now being built, three of which have already been finished.
