Nationwide Electric Vehicle Charging Network to be Installed in Ethiopia

The Ethiopian Petroleum and Energy Authority plans to build charging stations for electric vehicles every 50 to 120 kilometers across the country. The goal of this program is to facilitate long-distance travel and encourage the increasing use of EVs.

 

According to Bahru Oljra, Executive Director of Energy Sector Control, a new directive has been approved which outlines licensing, charging tariffs, power supply levels, and security standards for EV charging stations.

 

There are currently three different kinds of charging stations recognized: public, commercial, and residential establishments. Although site permissions have not yet been granted, Bahru stressed that current stations need to obtain licenses within six months of the directive's acceptance.

 

The Ministry of Transport and Logistics intends to support this endeavor by switching 432,000 gas-powered vehicles to electric ones in ten years. Ethiopia's transition to sustainable transportation is progressing in cities and towns across the country, with 100,000 EVs now in use.
