Trade, Investment, and Clean Energy Will Be Discussed By the UK Minister for Africa during His Visit to Tanzania

Posted on : Monday , 3rd March 2025

The British High Commission in Dar es Salaam released a statement on February 18, 2025, stating that the visit is the first by a UK minister to Tanzania since the new UK administration took office in July of last year and intends to expand ties in trade, investment, sustainable energy, and health.

Collins will tour the Port of Dar es Salaam during the two-day visit, the statement added, to underline Tanzania's and the UK's shared commitment to economic growth and the value of facilities like the port in promoting both domestic and international trade.

The UK has contributed more than £55 million in Tanzania's infrastructure over the last ten years, with £10 million going towards the Dar es Salaam Maritime Gateway project, which has modernized and increased the port's efficiency.

In order to discuss measures to improve trade and investment between the two countries and evaluate the implementation of the Shared Prosperity Agreement, which was signed in April 2024, Lord Collins will also meet with ministers, business executives, and senior government officials.

In addition to £5.5 million in affordable loans for small and medium-sized businesses, the UK has announced a new $45 million investment in renewable energy and telecoms through British International Investment since the agreement's signing, the statement noted.

"Tanzania is a close friend of the UK, and our long-standing partnership continues to grow each day," said Lord Collins before to his visit. I'm excited to expand our cooperation in trade, investment, and sustainable development—from bolstering the health sector and climate change initiatives to enhancing vital infrastructure. Tanzania and the UK are prepared to collaborate in order to open doors for mutual prosperity.

The announcement states that Collins will begin a feasibility study to find ways to invest in Tanzania's key minerals industry, which is crucial for the production of renewable energy. This research is supported by the UK's "Manufacturing Africa" program. Additionally, he is scheduled to tour a company that manufactures electric vehicles.

Rachel Kyte, the UK's Special Representative on Climate Change, visited Dar es Salaam last month for the Africa Energy Mission 300 Conference. His visit comes after hers. She also announced an £8.5 million UK government commitment to the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) of the African Development Bank, which would help the private sector invest in renewable energy and increase access to clean energy throughout Africa.
