Tanzania Hails Progress in Sea-Based Nuclear Power Initiatives

Posted on : Monday , 31st August 2026

The outgoing Energy minister, Deogratius Ndejembi, made this statement at a two-day high-level meeting, during which the UN agency highlighted the necessity of enhancing dialogue, fostering innovation, and aiding its member states in advancing maritime transport as a key element in the global clean energy transition.

The gathering that initiated the ATLAS initiative was influenced by worldwide endeavors to adopt nuclear energy applications in the transition from fossil fuels. Its objective is to promote innovation in the maritime industry to hasten the advancement of nuclear technologies, including small modular reactors (SMRs), which are increasingly viewed as practical solutions for generating power at sea.

Online resources indicate that Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) could enable civilian ships to operate with no emissions, allowing these vessels to navigate longer distances and at increased speeds without the necessity for regular refueling. Furthermore, advanced nuclear technologies might assist in the development of floating nuclear power plants (FNPPs), which would deliver electricity and heat to coastal communities and industries, while also enabling the production of alternative fuels such as hydrogen.

According to the minister, this initiative is focused on fostering the safe, secure, and peaceful use of nuclear technologies for maritime transport and offshore energy systems, and he voiced his support for the innovative nuclear technologies being developed through the ATLAS initiative. He emphasized that new energy solutions have the potential to enhance energy security, facilitate industrialization, and address climate change. He commended the IAEA for its role in initiating this initiative, viewing it as a significant advancement in innovative nuclear technologies.

According to him, this will increase the potential applications of nuclear energy around the world, as the fast-paced changes in the global energy landscape were driving the need for countries to unite in developing technologies that can address the surging energy needs. Pointing out the importance of reliability, affordability, and sustainability, he indicated that energy security has become progressively vital as nations seek to boost their economies, advance industries, and provide stable electricity to their growing populations.

He stated that international collaboration is crucial for recognizing and implementing technologies that can enhance long-term energy security, while also assisting nations in minimizing the environmental effects of economic growth. Tanzania is engaged in a diversified energy approach that facilitates the use of multiple sources depending on their availability, suitability, and contribution to the country's development.

The energy mix features hydropower, natural gas, solar, and wind, as well as other renewable energy sources. He noted that it is essential to diversify in order to avoid supply interruptions that could happen if a nation is dependent on one key energy source.

The government is keeping track of advancements in innovative energy technologies, such as nuclear technologies, to enhance opportunities for safe, reliable, and sustainable energy while also promoting economic and social development, he stated. The ATLAS initiative was one of the topics addressed during the high-level meeting, which concentrated on the possibilities of licensed nuclear technologies for marine applications.

In the previous year, the government has supported a combination of energy sources, where renewable energy has been crucial in efforts to enhance accessibility while also addressing environmental challenges. Hydropower is an essential part of the national electricity system, and natural gas, solar, and wind energy provide further opportunities to expand generation capacity and diversify the energy supply.

The transition to renewable energy should also recognize the importance of promoting industrial growth, since consistent and affordable energy is essential for the advancement of productive sectors. Countries need stable power supplies to bolster industries, businesses, and other economic endeavors, highlighting the significance of energy technologies in tackling climate change, he added.

As countries aim to cut emissions while fostering economic development, he noted that the advancement of technology and international partnerships will play a vital role in finding solutions that fulfill energy and environmental targets.
